- I have just purchased this recording, mainly on the strength of the two reader comments which I now find very misleading.This is one of the great symphonies, but ONLY if the conductor realises that this piece, especially, needs a great interpreter who understands that the music needs to be moved along at a good pace in order for it not to bog down in overtly romanticised sentiment.I used to own an l.p. conducted by the late, great, Paul Kletski with the O.S.R. but this is sadly no longer available. This remains the benchmark for conducting this symphony and I have not been able to find any other performance that comes anywhere near it.Polyansky is so slow in the first movement that I was wondering…
- Mr. Polyansky provides a beautiful, lush interpretation of Rachmaninoff's second symphony. The strings are well balanced against the horns, the tempos are appropriate, never rushed for drama or restrained to the point of boredom. And the Russian State Symphonic Cappella choir is, as usual, outstanding.
